Spirit of American Youth

The Spirit of American Youth project is one of the most meaningful digital sculptures I’ve created, not only because of its visual impact, but because of the history behind the original work. The sculpture I recreated sits in the central fountain at The Americana at Brand, a large outdoor shopping and entertainment plaza in Glendale, California. It’s a striking piece on its own, but what makes it truly special is that it’s a reinterpretation of a much older and deeply significant sculpture: Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves, the memorial dedicated to American soldiers at Normandy. When I decided to recreate the Americana version in 3D, I wanted to honor both the artistic craftsmanship of the sculpture itself and the historical weight carried by the original monument.

My goal with this project was to capture the emotional energy and upward momentum that defines the sculpture. The figure’s pose conveys a sense of aspiration, strength, and youthful determination. Even though the Americana version is a stylized reinterpretation, it still carries the essence of the original memorial — the idea of rising, striving, and pushing forward. I approached the modeling process with that theme in mind, focusing on anatomy, gesture, and the flow of the sculpted forms. I wanted the digital version to feel alive, expressive, and cinematic.

To begin the project, I gathered as many reference images as I could from the Americana plaza. Because the sculpture is installed outdoors, lighting conditions vary dramatically depending on the time of day, and I wanted to understand how natural light interacts with the gold material. The sculpture’s surface has a reflective quality that shifts between warm highlights and deep shadows, and capturing that behavior was essential to achieving realism. I studied the way the gold finish responds to sunlight, how the contours catch reflections, and how the fountain environment influences the overall mood.

The modeling process was done with a combination of sculpting and traditional polygonal workflows. I focused heavily on anatomical accuracy, even though the original sculpture is stylized. The figure’s posture, musculature, and proportions needed to feel believable, and I spent time refining the gesture to ensure the upward motion felt natural. Once the sculpt was complete, I moved into shader development. Creating a convincing gold material required layered reflections, subtle roughness variation, and careful control of specular response. I wanted the final render to feel like a polished metal statue illuminated by cinematic lighting.

Lighting played a major role in the final presentation. I built a lighting setup that emphasized the sculpture’s heroic qualities — strong directional light to highlight contours, soft fill light to preserve detail, and controlled reflections to enhance the metallic surface. The final composition draws the viewer’s eye upward, reinforcing the sculpture’s theme of aspiration and rising energy. My goal was to create a digital image that feels both respectful of the original memorial and visually compelling in its own right.

This project represents my interest in combining cultural history with modern digital craftsmanship. It allowed me to explore anatomy, material creation, lighting, and composition while paying tribute to a sculpture that carries emotional and historical significance. Recreating the Spirit of American Youth in 3D gave me the opportunity to reinterpret a powerful symbol through my own artistic lens, and it remains one of my favorite pieces in my portfolio.
